New maritime school on the cards for Durban

Tender issued for building of new maritime school

SOUTH AFRICA, Durban: Plans to build a dedicated maritime-focused school in Durban were revealed this week as the Development Bank of South Africa released a request for proposals for the construction of the school on the site of an existing school in the Umlazi District.

According to the tender documents, the school will need to accommodate a total enrolment of 700 learners and will include a media centre, school hall, computer room as well as six multi-purpose classrooms to cater for physical sciences, life sciences, nautical sciences and maritime economics.

A separate boy’s and girls’ hostel is also planned to accommodate at least 300 boarders that will be equally allocated across the genders.

Although the aerial view of the current site already shows a swimming pool that is adjacent to the existing school, the tender documents include the requirement to construct a new pool of 33.3 m by 16.6 m with a depth of 2 metres overall.

The RFP closes at the end of January 2020.
